What the research says about modular enclosures and pet welfare
Scientific studies and animal welfare guidance consistently support the use of appropriately sized, enriched, and secure enclosures to reduce stress, encourage natural behaviour, and improve physical health. Research in animal behaviour and veterinary science shows that environmental complexity and safe space to exercise are linked to better mental and physical outcomes for companion animals. Practical guidance from UK welfare organisations also highlights that well designed, adaptable enclosures help owners meet changing needs as animals grow or move between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Environmental enrichment reduces stress and stereotypic behaviours: multiple peer reviewed studies show animals given varied, changeable environments display fewer signs of frustration and more species typical behaviours.
Exercise and space matter: veterinary research links regular access to secure activity space with improved muscle tone, weight control, and lower incidence of behaviour problems in birds and small mammals.
Safety and escape prevention reduce injury: secure connectors and robust fittings lower the risk of escapes and accidental injury, a point emphasised in guidance from UK welfare organisations.
Modularity supports long term cost efficiency: modular systems allow staged upgrades and reconfiguration as pets' needs change, which can be more sustainable than replacing entire enclosures.
