Live Silkworms Feeder Insects — UK Guide 2026 (Top 6 Picks)
Live silkworms are soft-bodied feeder insects commonly used to feed reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish and poultry. They are prized for their high-quality protein, gentle texture that suits juvenile or delicate feeders, and ease of acceptance by many species. In the UK market consumers look for fresh live stock, reliable next-day delivery, ethical rearing practices and clear supplier traceability. Recent trends show growing interest in sustainable, low-impact feed choices and greater attention to hygiene, supplier transparency and welfare during transport. For 2026 there is no single consensus 'top' supplier or ranked product set for live silkworms in the UK — supply is fragmented across specialist breeders, small online retailers and local hatcheries, and standards vary. That makes it important for buyers to prioritise freshness, supplier reviews, clear handling guidance and biosecurity measures when choosing live silkworm feeders.

Learn the science: why silkworms work as feeders
Scientific and husbandry research supports silkworms as a nutritious, easily digested feeder option, particularly for young or sensitive animals. Studies and practical husbandry experience highlight their favorable protein-to-fat ratio, high digestibility because of a soft body, and the benefits of targeted gut-loading to boost vitamins and minerals before feeding. At the same time, research stresses the importance of controlled rearing and proper handling to minimise disease risk and ensure consistent nutritional quality.
High-quality protein: Silkworms provide a concentrated, easily digestible protein source suitable for growing reptiles and insectivorous birds.
Soft-bodied, low chitin: Compared with many hard-shelled insects, silkworms have lower chitin, making them gentler for hatchlings and small species to digest.
Gut-loading increases value: Feeding silkworms a nutrient-rich diet shortly before delivery reliably improves their vitamin and mineral content for the animal being fed.
Environmental footprint: Insect farming, including silkworm rearing, typically uses less land and water and produces fewer emissions than traditional livestock, supporting sustainability trends in the UK pet market.
Biosecurity matters: Proper rearing, quarantine and hygienic transport are crucial to reduce pathogen risk; freezing or gut-emptying protocols are widely recommended where appropriate.
Regulatory and safety context: Buyers should choose reputable UK suppliers who can explain rearing practices, transport conditions and any health checks, because quality and safety depend on husbandry standards.
